Brain Scans Cannot Diagnose Autism
The BBC, the Guardian and Reuters this week widely reported British researchers published in the Journal of Neuroscience have developed a brain scan which can detect autism in adults with 90% accuracy.
Dr Christine Ecker, the lead author, showed her imaging technique was able to detect which people in her group had autism. "If we get a new case, we will also hopefully be 90% accurate," she said.
Pretty simple then, you turn up, have the test, and you have a 90% chance of finding out whether you have autism.
Well, you couldn't be any further from the truth. To determine if a test is accurate, it might appear reasonable to ...
House Prices To Fall Further
Only a mug bets against rising house prices in Britain. This is a small island that has a rising population, tight planning controls and a tax system that favours property. Demand tends to run well ahead of supply, and that means bricks and mortar always seems a good investment.
Well, call me a mug if you like, but house prices are overpriced and have to fall. Activity is weak, with the number of new mortgage applications running at less than half their pre-recession levels. First-time buyers, according to a survey from ...
Serial Hoarder Found Buried Under Rubbish At Home
A four month search for a missing woman in the US had ended after she was found buried under piles of rubbish at her home. Billie Jean James was found by her husband who had been living in the same house as his wife’s corpse. He spotted one of her feet sticking out from underneath the mountain of rubbish and clutter that littered ...
Family Win 18 year fight for MMR compensation.

A Levels Crush Creativity
Students are being prevented from showing "originality and creativity" by drilling for A-level exams, a leading headmistress has warned. Pupils now have access to online model answers, marking schemes and other information that has taken the “mystique” out of what markers are looking for, according to Cynthia Hall, the headmistress of Wycombe Abbey.
The girls’ boarding school in Buckinghamshire has topped an A-level league table of private schools for the third year in a row.
Murdoch Is Too Powerful Says BBC Director
Mark Thompson, the BBC director general, has launched a scathing attack on Rupert Murdoch's media empire, warning that BSkyB is too powerful and threatens to "dwarf" the BBC and its competitors.
Delivering the annual MacTaggart lecture at the Mediaguardian Edinburgh television festival, Thompson rounded on Sky's chairman, James Murdoch, who used the same speech last year to attack the corporation.
Electric Cars Can Be Costlier
The Daily Stirrer has always said there is little real advantage in a switch to electric cars. They are only clean 'on the road' depending on fossil fuelled power stations for electricity, there is an enormous crbon footprint involved in making and scrapping batteries and the range is so poor tyhey have to have a small petrol engine fitted. This means you can drive your whizzy little electric car out to see you deal old Mum but on the way back, if the round trip is over 40 miles (or 25 if you have the radio on) you have to switch to a hopelessly underpowered and therefore highly polluting fossil fuelled unit ...

Women Cant Resist The Smell Of Alpha Males
It is thought the phenomenon helps women sniff out alpha males, in the belief they will provide them with healthy children.
The scented signal may also provide wimps with a subtle warning that there is a superior male nearby who is not to be messed with.
It is often said that horses sweat, men perspire and women glow. But real men have a smell all of their own.
Macho men have a different type of body odour to others, research has found ...

US Economy Growth Figures Revised Down (Breitbart)
The United States economy was last month reported to have grown at an annual rate of 2.4% in the second quarter of 2010. That figure was today revised downward to 1.6%, well below the rate of inflation. The revision was said to be due to an unprecendented surge in imports...
Stock Markets Face A Bloodbath (Daily Telegraph)
Investors should brace themselves for an equities "bloodbath" and a further fall in bond yields when the current excessive optimism propping up the market seeps away, Albert Edwards, a strategist at Société Générale, has warned.
Mr Edwards said there was too much hope among investors, with excessive valuations in the US, but predicted it would come to an end in the coming months as economic data increasingly pointed to a double-dip recession.
"Equity investors are in for a rude shock. The global economy is sliding back into recession and they are still not even aware that these events will trigger ...

Population Zero, Members Of Government, Four. It's a Socialist Utopia
read about Ellen MacArthur’s trip to South Georgia last Sunday so I thought I would have a look at the delights of South Georgia on line today. I was amazed to find that this proud little island, which once had a population of 2000, has its own little website. It is a perfect Fabian statelet. There are no permanent inhabitants (it’s a bit chilly even in summer) ruining the ambience but it has a Government of four , it actually charges income tax !

Works Of Art Must Not Be Left To Rot In Copyright Hell
There is something particularly dispiriting about the prospect of works of art languishing in obscurity because no copyright holder can be found. It’s bad enough that someone’s creative efforts lie forgotten but for this situation to arise because of the unsatisfactory legislative tangle that is copyright law seems particularly galling. Earlier this week, a leader in…

Three Things Are Wrong With The Left Wing Think Tank Assessment Of The Budget
When the Government announced its emergency budget earlier this summer, they were at pains to stress that they were cutting spending in a “fair” way. They even produced their own version of the “decile graphs” which used to be so beloved of Gordon Brown. These charts purport to show the impact of policy changes on…

Buget Hits The Poorest Hardest Says Left Wing Think Tank
Well they would, wouldn't they? The coalition government's first Budget has hit the poorest families hardest, a leading economic think tank has said. Its analysis suggests that low income families with children are set to lose the most - about 5% of net income - due to benefit cuts announced ...

The Great University Con
So predictable, so rote is the newspaper coverage of exam season that I can only presume editors of mid-market newspapers have to sit their own A-level on how to report them. Shots of exuberant blondes jumping up and down clutching their results? That gets you a basic pass. Fancy-that story about an Asian lad with top grades in maths and science – even though he's only 10 and in all likelihood faces an adolescence of Belmarsh-style bullying? Now you're up to a B. Labour's Immigration Policy Led To A Genetic Tragedy
It’s a strange irony that mass immigration, which is supposed to bring us diversity, has led to a massive increase in inbreeding. Shell Cleared Of Polluting Niger Delta

Credit Card Debt Boom Fears
Despite warnings of a potential double dip recession, banks are presenting struggling customers with offers of cheaper debt than they made available before the 2007 economic crash.

It comes amid concerns of future job losses, particulary as the Coalition government’s spending cuts are due to take effect...

Ground Zero Mosque - The Jewish Response
Barack Obama has once again revealed his incomptence and weakness in his response to the plan to build a mosque on Ground Zero, the site of the World Trade Centre. Obama first supported the pan then in the face of a public opinion backlash backed off.
Over a million Jews live in New York and the world’s ultimate metropolis has an unashamedly Jewish vibe. So the furore over the the “Ground Zero mosque” in Lower Manhattan inevitably provoked a Jewish response.
For Jewish New Yorkers, the 9/11 attack was primarily an assault on their city and country, but a subsidiary fear is that the same Islamic terrorists who despise America also hate Jews-Zionists-Israelis.

Gay Divorce Rate Doubles The honeymoon appears to be over for many of Britain’s same-sex couples as official figures show the number of civil partnerships being dissolved has doubled over the past year. In addition, fewer homosexuals are now forming the legal unions than at any point since their introduction five years ago. The declining popularity of the civil partnership could be down to the fact that most of the men or women in long-term same-sex relationships who were waiting for official recognition have now obtained it.

Middle Class Benefits To Be Cut
From BBC News
The Treasury is reviewing what it spends on welfare for the middle classes, such as the winter fuel allowance and child benefit.
Such payments would continue to be available but future increases could be frozen, the BBC understands.
A spokesman said they were "in the mix" ahead of October's spending review.
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, speaking as the coalition marked 100 days in power, said no final decisions had been taken. One option open to the government is to pay the benefits to all, whatever their income, but to "taper" them so that the poorest in society get the most money.
Ministers are already committed to raising the age at which the winter fuel allowance can be claimed from 60 to 65 by 2020.
However, the government has not ruled out bringing this change forward.

We Will Improve Lives Not Offer Handouts Says Clegg
The Deputy Prime Minister accused Labour of spending ''huge sums'' on welfare for low-income households without any ''discernable impact'' on the life chances of their children.
Mr Clegg, the Liberal Democrat leader, confirmed that former minister Alan Milburn has been appointed as the Government's independent reviewer on social mobility.
Speaking at an event organised by the CentreForum think-tank, Mr Clegg said: ''Under Labour huge sums of money were spent pushing low-income households just above the statistically defined level of household income - sometimes by just a few pounds a week - but with no discernible impact on the real life chances of the next generation.
Food Crisis Fears Over Lack Of Bees
Researchers at the University of Worcester analysed the pollen collected by bees from 45 hives on National Trust property around the country.
They found that bees in towns and cities have a much more “varied diet”, taking pollen from different flowers.
For example at Kensington Palace in London, where the Duke of Gloucester is keeping bee hives, the samples contained large amounts of pollen from rockrose, eucalyptus and elderberry.
In contrast bees in the countryside tended to rely on fields of crops. At Nostell Priory in Yorkshire and Barrington Court in Somerset, the samples were heavily dominated by oilseed rape with little other ...

Osborne Defends Plan To Slash Deficit
The chancellor, George Osborne, insisted today there would be no government backtracking on plans to slash Britain's record peacetime budget deficit and warned that a U-turn would leave the economy on course for disaster.

UK Inflation Slows In July
UK inflation eased to 3.1% in July from 3.2% in June, the third month in a row that prices have risen more slowly. The Consumer Prices Index (CPI) however is still well above the Bank of England's 2% target rate. The Retail Prices Index (RPI) slowed to 4.8% from 5% in June, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.
Here we see one again this bizarre attempt at deception of which governments have become so fond. The rate of inflation has eased so they present this as if the problem of inflation has been overcome. What should concern us more than the headline however is that figure for Resale Price Index which is a better guide to the effects of rising prices on weekly or monthly household budgets.
Barack Obama Abandoned By The Left
When your own tribe turns on you, you’re in serious trouble. Barack Obama was never going to convert Republican irreconcilables. Many US conservatives had convinced themselves before the election that Obama would be an interfering socialist. Fair enough: he was never really after their support.
Far more worrying for the forty-fourth president is the way in which he has been abandoned by his own. Here is Maureen Dowd in the New York Times: We’ve known that the Left was mad at Obama, but now we know Obama is mad at the Left ...
Social Workers Surreal ~Investigation Recalls Satanic Abuse Fiasco
There could have been few more bizarre meetings anywhere in Britain last week than that between a married mother and the social workers who had taken her six young children to place them unhappily in foster care. A Levels Are Not Fit For Purpose
I found studying for my A-levels in the Seventies the most stimulating academic experience of my life. Artificial Meat Could Solve Global Food Crisis
Over 9 billion people are expected to inhabit the planet by 2050 and the challenge of providing them with enough food to live without destroying the environment is increasingly tough. Dr Philip Thornton, of the International Livestock Research Institute in Nairobi, said: “One [solution] is artificial meat, which is made in a giant vat.”
He added that another could be the use of nanotechnology, or molecular engineering, to deliver medication to livestock, which could increase their efficiency....

Country Folk Are Doing It For Themselves
Chill winds are blowing in the countryside, and they're nothing to do with the autumnal weather. For 13 years, activists have been telling the world that Labour had no sympathy for the rural population – indeed, viewed it, in some cases, with malevolence. Now they are realising that things weren't so bad after all.
The coalition victory has not brought them to a Promised Land. They have seen the glint of a spending axe and are waiting for it to fall. Far from being protected by the Conservatives and Lib Dems, the natural parties of the countryside, the rural world may find that the pain is even ...
Pension Age Would Have To Reach 72 To Contain Costs Of Ageing
The Pensions Policy Institute said it is unfair and expensive for workers to retire at the same age as those born decades before them, as life expectancy is increasing substantially. But it warned that poor people do not live as long as the rich, and suggested that they should therefore receive more in their state pensions. The PPI’s suggestions were made in a submission to a review by the Department for Work and Pensions of the ...
Over A Million People On Sick For A Decade (Sunday Telegraph)
According to figures published by the Department for Work and Pensions, 889,000 people have spent the last ten years on sickness benefits, costing an average of £4.2billion a year.
The welfare minister Chris Grayling said that the number of people on sickness benefit would be reduced through a new assessment system.
“The sheer amount of people who have been left behind without any help or support to get back into work is outrageous,” said Mr Grayling. “Under Labour, thousands of people who have simply been cast aside by a welfare system that does nothing but put them in a queue for benefits and then forgets about them.”
Under the current rules, someone can be paid benefits for up to 13 weeks before being formally assessed by a medical examiner.
This is all very well but we were under the impression that chronically ill and disabled people are often not capable of working. Shouldn't the assessments be aimed at the lazy buggers who have been on the dole for ten years?
Council Pay Prositutes For The Disabled
A £520 million scheme promised to give elderly people and those with disabilities more control over the care they received, by passing on cash so individuals could choose the services they needed, such as home help, or mobility aids is causing a few raised eyebrows.
An investigation by The Sunday Telegraph can disclose that exotic holidays, internet dating subscriptions and adventure breaks, as well as visits to sex workers and lap dancing clubs have been permitted under the system.
One local authority has agreed a care plan including payment for a 21-year-old with learning disabilities to have sex with a prostitute in Amsterdam next month.
We think this is taking things a bit far. After all the money they have spent patrolling red light areas, hutting down brothels and massage parlours and naming and shaming kerb crawlers it looks like different rules for different people.
PetraeusHedges On Afghanistan Withdrawal from BBC News
The new commander of foreign forces in Afghanistan, Gen David Petraeus, says he will not be bound by a 2011 target date to start withdrawing US troops. Speaking on NBC television, Gen Petraeus said he reserved the right to tell President Obama whether the pull-out date was too early.
He was speaking after US forces endured their deadliest month in July since the Afghan conflict began in 2001. Gen Petraeus said the Afghan mission was tough and would remain so.
President Barack Obama set the 2011 withdrawal date at the same time as he announced the troop surge intended to end Taliban resistance.
Looks like Petraeus has read some history books but Obie hasn't. The Daily Stirrer predicted ahead of the announcement of Obama's troop surge it would only lead to higher allied casualties and a more ignominious end to the war.

Obama Running Out Of Ideas
In his haste to withdraw America's remaining combat troops from Iraq, President Barack Obama appears to have overlooked one rather vital consideration. The Iraqis are desperate for them to stay.
Iraq might be a very different place today from the country that was oppressed by Saddam Hussein's dictatorship, but it still has some way to go before it completes the transition to the functioning democracy the majority of Iraqis crave. When Tariq Aziz, Saddam's former apologist-in-chief, issues a stark warning from his Baghdad prison cell that his country will be thrown to the wolves if the Americans leave, we should all ...

Mervyn King, the Bank's Governor, said at a press conference in London that while "the UK recovery is likely to continue, the overall outlook is weaker," than at the time of the Bank's last forecast in the spring. These predictions underline the dilemma facing the government's ...
Stunning New Image Of Spiral Galaxy
The galaxy, titled NGC 4911, lies more than 320 million light-years away in the "Coma Cluster" of about 1,000 galaxies and islands of stars similar to the Milky Way. (follow link above for pictures and full story)
Nasa said the stunning long-exposure picture, titled “Island Universe”, shows the “majestic face-on spiral galaxy” in the northern constellation Coma Berenices amid a sea of stars. The galaxy contains “rich lanes of dust and gas near its centre” and is silhouetted against glowing newborn star clusters and iridescent pink clouds of hydrogen, which indicates ongoing star formation.
Nasa scientists say the cluster is one of ...
Multiculturalism Is The New Communism
I have a book review in this week’s Catholic Herald of Roger Scruton’s The Uses of Pessimism. As he once recounted, when he arrived at Birkbeck in the mid-70s there was just one other conservative in the entire…

A Weird Kind Of Depression
Californian businessman Victor Davis Hanson writes: Economic statistics paint a pretty grim picture: annual growth coming out of a recession at an anemic 2.4%; unemployment rising at 9.6%; and foreclosures again on the rise. Here in California the jobless rate is 12.5%. And where I live in Fresno County it hovers at 16%. Bleak. I can see some of that general depression when my son’s friends gather...

Climate Alarmists or Warmists Are Getting Desperate.
Ever more risibly desperate become the efforts of the believers in global warming to hold the line for their religion, after the battering it was given last winter by all those scandals surrounding the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. One familiar technique they use is to attribute to global warming almost any unusual weather event anywhere in the world. Last week, for instance, it was reported that Russia has recently been experiencing its hottest temperatures and longest drought for 130 years. The head of the Russian branch of WWF, the environmental pressure group, was inevitably quick to cite this as evidence of climate change, claiming that in future "such climate abnormalities will only become more frequent". He didn't explain what might have caused the similar hot weather 130 years ago.
Meanwhile, notably little attention has been paid to the disastrous chill which has been ...

Marital Rape In America - A Crime For Non Muslims, OK For Muslims A recent case decided by the appeal court in New Jersey seems to show Barack Obama is making good on one promise at least, they one he made to the effect that under his Presidency the courts would favour the darker skinned races rather that dispensing justice on the basis of a case's merits. The case in question ruled that a Muslim man may rape his wife because that is in keeping with the Islamic marriage tradition. Naturally all the Obama felching liberals are praising the "progressive thinking" behind this decision. The Daily Stirrer says Amereica has abandoned the rule of law in favour of the rule of an African village tyrant.
Iain Duncan Smith's Welfare Reforms

Did BP Lobby For Lockerbie Bomber's Release
The last time Sir Nigel Sheinwald, Britain’s ambassador to Washington, was involved in a “row” was in 2008 when a letter from him was leaked, in which he described Barack Obama as “liberal” and questioned his capability. That was about as controversial as our envoy to the Vatican describing the Pope as Catholic. Now, Sheinwald has called the release of Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali Mohmet al-Megrahi a “mistake”, in what can only be seen as an attempt by the Coalition Government to disown the aberrations of the Scottish Nationalist devolved administration in Scotland. And it is small wonder....

Why The Financial Crisis Is Going To Hurt
Nice clothes and holidays have been ridiculously cheap for 30 years. That's why the drop in living standards will be tough. I'm only 47, and I cannot believe how much life in Britain has changed in my time. (For a start, "only 47" wasn't said much in 1962, except perhaps on the occasion of death.) Even London Cabbies Are Turning On Barak Obama

Was Gen. McChrystal Obama's Fall Guy
General McChrystal lost his job as a result of Obama's lack of input into the Afghan war, argues Con Coughlin in the Daily Telegraph. The President has been ctiticased for his aloofness and detachment from the concerns of ordinary Americans over the failure of his Afghan strategy as his response to the Oil Spill. One thing we have learned of the Presient so far however, nothing is ever his problem.

E750 billion is not enough to bail out Europe basket cases
According to FT Deutschland, the EU is preparing itself for a Spanish bail-out (hat-tip, Open Europe). If Spain were to follow Greece, the money so far set aside by the eurozone states would be wholly inadequate, says the EU President. We are trying to stay off politics right now as everyone is sick of it all. We are especially trying to stay off American politics as that will not be interesting to us British again until 2012. But I had to blog this story
Every State For Itself
National leaders have suddenly become a lot less bullish about a "global recovery." Could the Deepwater Horizon oil spill have reminded them just how dependent we are on oil?
Bilderberg 2010 - Don't Call It A Pow Wow.
Since the cover of the Bilderberg group was blown and nobody could any longer pretend it did not exist the official line has been it is just a meeting of rich, powerful folks getting together for some fine dining and a jolly old chin wag. But if that is true why spend 10 million Euros on a security operaion mainly designed to keep the media away from the week long conference.
US Bloodlust and the BP Oil Spill Has Obama's anti Britain rabble rousing against BP over the Deepwater Horizon oil spill gone too far? It is beginning to lok as if a bsaklash against Obama himself is gathering momntum following his knee jerk reaction to shut down offshore drilling.
Mirror Mirror On The Wall

Whose Disaster Is The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill The oil spill now in its seventh week in the Gulf Of Mexico is a catastrophe for the people who live along that coast and make their living from its beaches and waters. It is a problem of huge proportions for well operator BP. But it is Backack Obama's disaster. The indecision and lacjk of leadership qualities he has show expose him for the vacuous man he is.

At last the climate extremists try to debate
Christopher Monckton takes up arms against an endless sea of climate change alarmists, science Marxists and "progressive" loonies who believe anyone who does not agree with them is a "right wing nut job" or a young eaeth creationist. The Dail;y Stirrer does not like bullies no matter which side of the debate they are on so we recommend Monckton even though we are left of centre.

With No Common Culture A Common History Is Impossible "There are two overriding objections to modern culture's eagerness to put labels on people. The first is that, often intentionally and sometimes merely carelessly, a label diminishes the complexity, nuance and uncertainty of the person on whom it is stuck. The second is that the label provides a lazy excuse to stop thinking about what the neatly labelled person is actually saying."

Silly Secularist Of The Year The arrogance of scientists gets more gobsmacking as time goes on. Terry Sanderson, President Of The Nstional Secular Society says: “I look at it this way. If science disappeared from human memory, we would soon be living in caves again. If theology disappeared from human memory, no one would notice. Theology is a completely and utterly useless pursuit. It is self-indulgence of the first order. It grieves me that public money is spent on theological colleges while real education struggles to gain the funds it needs to maintain itself.”

Why Politicians Will Always Punish The Poor The coalition may pass themselves off as friends of liberty but really this unholy alliance of Liberal Democrats and Conservatives is as big a fan of the authoritarian Politically Correct Thought Police as any Labour government. They may talk of winning hearts and minds but its really only the minds they want.
The High Price Of Political Correctness. Anna Raccoon on splendid for as she excoriates the gay mafia and their mincing outrage at the trial and sentencing of two Malawian gay men who were celebrating their engagement party when police burst in and arrested them. For this blog the matter ends with the fact that homosexuality is illegal in Malawi, we have no right telling other nations how to run their society. Anna however lands some well aimed kicks in the groin of the pink mafia.
Turning The CorkscrewDick Puddlecoat attacks the latest Politically Correct Thought Police Scheme to plaster big health warnings over the lables of wine, beer and spirit bottles. Synthetic DNA is sary but not for the reason you think Craign Venter's hyperbloic claim to have created artificial life is scary but not because of the unrealistic Frankenstein scenario it raises. Spain's Much Praised Green Economy Model Discredited Spain's Green Economy model that had "progressive" world leaders and opinion makers creaming their pants has been exposed as unviable, built on unrealistic mathematical modelling as as having contributed to Spain's debt and unemployment models. Why Charles Kennedy Refused To Back The Coalition Charles Kennedy and some other Liberal woolly brained woolybacks are refusing to support the Con Lib coalition saying it destroys any hope of a centre left alliance. Where have they been for the past 13 years. Labour will never enter an alliance or agree to electoral reform as long as they think they have a chance of governing alone.

Greek Tragedy Of The EU?
Someone had to say it and who better than German Chancellor Angela Merkel? The Greek Financial Tragedy and deepening sovereign debt crises in Portugal, Italy, Ireland and Spain could cause the disintegration of the EU. On a brighter note it could spell the end of federalism and a return to a functionong trade association of nations with broadly similar cultures.
Whoops! CO2 has almost nothing to do with Global Warming Another scientist published work that disprives the conventional wisdon on CO2 driven Global Warming. It does not close the case but neither do the quasi religious rants of Anthropogenic Global Warming zealots.
Carbon Dioxide Capture And Cancer Excellent article from Bishop Hill as usual though I find the carbon - cancer link a bit hard to credit. Still it demonstates once again that scientists are too eager to meddle with nature in ways that have a totally unpredictable outcome.
Carbon Capture Pros and Cons. Well as one might expect from a paper that supported "climate change sciene" until long after the position became untenable, the cons are mostly in the comment thread.
