The tyrannous surveillance state predicted in George Orwell's dystopian novel "1984" (cover illustration on first edition: A military boot treading on a human face) has gradually crept up on us. With no sense of irony whatsoever the government of the nation that calls itself "The land of the free" has led the way in trying to persade citizents that the only way they can be sasfe from vague and largely fictitious "existential threats to democracy" is to surrender our civil rights and freedom to determine our own destiny, so that the elite can protect us from external threats identical to the ones posed by the local buraucratic dictatorships that are emerging.

Like the p roverbial frog sitting in a pan of water that is poised over a fire, too many people in the developed world seem unaware that the slow boil of totalitarianism is killing their personal freedoms and civil liberties.

The latest sign of this move from representative democracy to Fascism by stealth was revealed in the US Senate by FBI Director James Comey, who expressed the agencies objections to the use of encryption by private individuals in order to protect personal information the government has no automatic right to obtain. Similar moves are afoot in the European Union, the UK and the few other places around the globe where civil rights are enshrined in constitutional law rather than at the discretion of the of the uniformed goon who is pointing a gun at you.

As reported by The New American, Comey testified that he believes the government’s surveillance and law enforcement departments should have unrestricted access to all electronic information Americans may store or send in electronic format: On computer storage devices, smart phones, in the i-clouds spinging up everywhere that sane people should avoid even for storing e-books, in emails and in text messages and all for our own safety and protection of course. Like most people in governmet, Comey believes national security outweighs constitutional rights or due process, even though he cannot name one credible threat to national security. But the feels anyone objecting to his total surveillance dreams should be identified as an enemy of the state. After all, aren’t criminals the only ones who really have anything to hide?

In testimony given at a session of the Senate Judiciary Committee titled “Going Dark: Encryption, Technology, and the Balance Between Public Safety and Privacy” Comey stated that for security agencies to stay one step ahead of international terror organisations, as well as organised crime and cybercrime, the US government's various spy and law enforcement agencies should have the ability to deploy technology used to de-encrypt protected data backed by law. Also, he believes the government (i.e. his agency) should be have the power to decide when decryption is necessary.

When we talk about democracy, because of the innate conservatism of the 'progressives' who diminate higher education, the discussion gets stuck on the Greeks. Modern democracy hoever has little to do with Pericles, Cleisthenes, Aristotle and company. The city states of ancient Greece made colossal strides in achieving rule by the people but we should not forget theirs was a slave economy and that the democratic governments ruled over small territories and populations only a fraction of what are found in modern nation states. Athens was by far the largest with an estimated population of two hundred thousand (half of which were probably slaves) but other cities such as Corinth and Thebes were much smaller.

With such small populations and only freeborn males being full citizens, direct democracy was not unreasistic. Additionally the city states were culturally homogenous so rule by plebiscite with every citizen being able to vote on all decisions did not present many logistical challenges. Our democracy is representative not direct, the product of national, not city, identity, as it was then. With millions of opinions to canvass and votes to count, direct democracy would be almost impossible, even if the average citizen could be well informed enough to vote on complex matters of international relations and such.

Modern democracy began, according to most schlars of political history, with the creation of the Westphalian System in 1648, which marked the end of the Thirty Years War, a conflict between the Catholic and Protestant states which emerges as The Holy Roman Empire, which dominated a vast tract of central Europe, disintegrated in a similar way to the break up of the Soviet Union in the late twentieth century.

The settlement set out for the first time the principles of national sovereignty totally independent from the Roman Catholic Church (which had effectively been the successor of the Roman Empire) and gave bith to a European of separate and sovereign nation states.

Tribes, clans and religious communties gave way to nations of people who thought themselves bound together not by blood or faith but by various cultural ties, principally language and history, tradition, economic interests. The next step naturally became one of organising their own government - not taking orders from a despotic ruler who in most cases was a client of an even more despotic Pontifex Maximus (the Emperor and High Priest of the Roman Sol Invictus cult (sic).

Rule by majority vote was still a long way off, in fact it was not until the socialistic thinking of religious reformers like The Moravians and The Wesleyans that drove so much of the democratisation of the 19th Century genuinely assumed that rule by the people would inevitably deliver a fair and equitable society.

The representative democracy we have today emerged out of a succession of grand battles in the 19th Century between competing interests, Marxists and Methodists, Capitalists versus Labour, free trade liberalism versus protectionist Conservatives.

Following World War One, the idea of government of the people by (the elected representatives of) the people had grown into a monster, a new meritocratic elite who were as fanatically engaged in preserving the status quo as the old aristocracies they replaced had once been.

The problems we see in democracy today flow out of the imperfections in the way the system has evolved.

First, there is the implausibility of the idea of a homogenous national identity in a nation state with a population of many millions, without any minority group feeling marginalised or excluded. Hitler and Stalin exposed this flaw in nation sates' representative democracy in a way that even his total defeat could not eradicate. Naziism showed how enough of the general populace could be inspired by the idea that they were all one people or "Volk" whose identity was threatened by minorities.

Adolf Hitler Hitler exposed the weaknesses of nation states. It took some years for the chaos that followed the second World War to settle before the social revolution of the 1960s set about the final demolition of the class system and the building of inclusive societies in which tolerance of diverse religions and lifestyles was the norm. Unfortunately this new tolerance was hijacked by a way of thinking which represented a new moral authoritarianism. These people styled themselves 'the left' but their narrow mindedness and quest for ideological purity gave them more in common with the Jesuits of the Inquisition than the 'anything goes' attitudes of ninteenth and early twentieth century Bohemianism.

And a fundamental pillar of their philosophy was that the old European culture which many refer to as Judeo Christian or sometimed Graeco - Roman but which is really a Celtic - Germanic culture (as already mentioned Greek city states were slave economies. Rome was an extremely brutal society whose emblem was the Fasces from which the word Fascist is derived. And while much of the bible may be based on the liturgy of the Jewish relion, culturally there is little Jewish influence.

A major part of the new, authoritarian elite's narrative is that the old western nations need mass immigration from the heavily populated, massively impoverished nations of the third world. The knowledge that we are importing ideas like honour killings, forced marriages, female genital mutilation and a culture that believe it is acceptable to gang rape young women who wear revealing clothes or go out without a male escort does not strike the left as being somewhat contradictory to their claim that immigration culturally enriches our societies.

Each of these ‘trade’ deals, TTIP, TPP, TESA and a few others is not so much about international commerce as establishing a system of global governance. They are about sovereignty — who rules? The unelected bureaucrats who lead the European Union have already established beyond doubt their contempt for democracy and the will of the people and there are few nations in Africa, Asia and South America that could be called democratic, even in a tongue in cheek way.

Each one of Obama's 'free trade' treaties contains clauses that empower international corporations to sue any nation party to the treaty, which tries to pass any regulation, including any environmental regulation, that is stricter than what is set in stone forever in the given ‘trade’ deal. Instead of sovereign nations, the member-states of these ‘trade’ associations will become subjects of international corporate dictatorship.

Defenders of Obama's bid to make himself the global Emperor will say the global corporations will not be empowered to change any law within any one of the member-nations; that is true. But they will be able to sue if any new law increasing their national standards so as to accommodate new scientific findings, or even merely in order to change financial regulations so as to prevent crashes such as in 1929 and 2008 is deemed to be likely to have an adverse effect on corporate ability to profit.

In summary these ‘trade’ deals will not directly block any increase in the regulations of food-safety, the environment, drug-safety, worker-safety, workers’ wages, medical care, education, or any of the many other things that governments must regulate in order for the public to be protected from corporate privacy. Instead, the corporations will be able to seek compensation in a special court consisting of corporate lawyers, for revenue lost due to comsumer and worker protection laws.

In other words: What the U.S. Senate did on 23 June 2015 was to hand America’s sovereignty over to international corporations. It gave President Obama what he had been seeking with unprecedented intensity, and which he has called his "legacy": it’s the power to transfer lots of America’s democratic national sovereignty over to international corporations — that is, to the roughly 100 individuals on this planet who own the controlling blocks of stock in the world’s large international corporations, the people who are the real beneficiaries in all of this.

The Daily Stirrer said back in 2008 this man was a nastier neo-liberal than Bush 1 & 2, Clinton or Reagan. Now do you believe us?

The killing of the young Eritrean was reported in sensationalist tones by the British media. The Guardian claimed it “exposes racial tensions in Germany” and “anti-immigration sentiment”. Vice News said “Germany’s recent upsurge in anti-Islam sentiment appears to have taken a dark new turn”, and reported the flat mate’s fabricated version of events as fact.

Maybe it is because German police have now recovered the murder weapon, that Khaled’s former flat-mate, a fellow Eritrean has confessed to the crime (another case of black on black violence that will somehow be blamed on 'white racism'), and “significant” amounts of drugs are allegedly involved, that the story has been dropped like a hot stone by the mainstream media. Two days after the confession, and you’d hardly know from the mainstream British press: clearly catering to the self hatred of middle class guilt addicts is more important that honest reporting of the facts in 21st centuryu Europe.

Typically of a left wing news sheet and without any sense of irony the same news sheet was almost orgasmic in their anticipation of victory for the Greek left wing extremists Syriza, an anti immigrant, anti - austerity party.

The mob mentality of the left gives them a delicious lack of self awareness.

In the same way, reporting of the sporadic violence at the Leipzig demonstration gives the impression PEGIDA supporters were responsible. The case is PEGIDA weren’t the ones throwing bottles and fireworks at Wednesday’s demonstration, it was the tens of thousands of left-wing counter-protesters who would stop at nothing to prevent the PEGIDA march from going ahead. Their behavior was a carbon copy of attempts by Britain's Anti Nazi League and Unite Against Fascism to break up protests by the English Defence League (EDL) and other anti immigration groups.

Appraised of the fact that train-loads of PEGIDA supporters would be coming from Dresden, the home of the movement where they had their own march banned by police, the Anti Fascist fascists and Anti - Nazi nazis and the rest of the rent-a-mob crowd's first action was to try to prevent their arrival of peaceful protesors by setting fire to the railway between the two cities.

The details of what happened during the protest are not clear, government propagandists had tried scaremongering tactics by forcasting a crown of 100,000 would reduce Leipzig to chaos and then claimed a great vitory for Hausfrau Merkel's government when only an estimated 40,000 turned out. Far more important however is that demonstrations across Germany were organised in support of PEGIDA, which shows that anti - government feeling is widespread whereever government policy is anti - European.

The state of democracy in the USA has become a hot topic of conversation in American business circles in recent years. While President Barack Hussein Obama, not so much a man as an ego on long skinny legs, has increasingly been inclined to rule by executive order in the manner of a despot or tyrant, even Obama's fiercest critics have to admit the American electoral system seems increasingly capable of delivering only political paralysis. (In order to prevent readers thinking this is going to be an anti - American polemic, it's fair to say now that Britain, France and most European counties are in a similar state.)

Many commentators complain that the USA is no longer a democracy nor a constitutional republic. One of the most powerful representations of this unfortunate fact came from an academic study highlighted last year: New Report from Princeton and Northwestern Proves It: The U.S. is an Oligarchy.

A couple of days ago, Silicon Valley venture capitalist and Hedge Fund manager Peter Thiel talked to Tyler Cower at George Mason University’s Mercatus center. The Washington Post picked up on some of his thoughts regarding the American political system, which provide food for thought.

While Thiel identifies the U.S.A. as neither a democracy or a constitutional republic, he goes on to state that the U.S. system is one in which the power is increasingly concentrated in undemocratic, “technocratic” agencies. The same has happened in Britain of course, where we have even coined a derogatory name for these power farms to which responsibility for government tasks is being farmed out. He fails to hit a scoring shot however by omitting to ask what interests are driving decisions made by the unelected bureaucrats who run these undemocratic entities. Given the revolving door between corporate Business and Government these days, an unbiased observer must be aware that the corporate oligarchs are driving the oligarchy, as opposed to independent thinking bureaucratic technocrats driving a technocracy.

This has been a regular theme of Daily Stirrer articles. Naturally, a former Exxon, Goldman Sachs or Monsanto executive now running a QUANGO (Quasi Autonomous Non-governmental Organization) might not admit to recognizing this.

Fortunately, the writer of the Washington Post article picked up on his oversight. Here is an excerpt:

Quantitative Easing, the response of western governments to the financial crisis on 2008 is a great example. Having reduced interest rates to just above zero%, governments then began a programme of selling bonds to inject cash into beleaguered economies. The bonds being sold carried a 'coupon value' (fixed interests rate, 3.1% for the USA, 3.5% for UK and varying figures according to the financial stability of the issuing economy. So why do visible signs of economic improvement seem so spectral? Well this is really comical: all developed world economies (except Germany) run a systemic deficit and have to borrow money to fund their obligations which include pensions, welfare benefits and so on. The oligarchs, who extract far more from society than they give back, quickly saw an opportunity, if governments were lending money at half-a-percent and borrowing at three-and-a-half per cent, why not borrow from government and then lend the money straight back by purchasing bonds.

To per cent profit margin may not seem much but believe me, in the world of high finance, where profit margin on transactions is usually a fraction of a percentage point, two per cent is a nice earner. Do the calculations and you'll see that a half per cent of $£€1billion is a decent days wages.

Of course the executives of the bank of England, The US Federal Reserve, the German bundesbank, the ECB, IMF, BIS etc. are all former senior executives of major commercial banks. The same situation exists in every major industry and the bodies that oversee or regulate them. Elected assemblies are just places where time servers who depend on donations from oligarchs to fund their election campaigns, are reduced to the function of rubber stamping regulations formulated by former (and future corporate executives for the benefit of the corporate cartels they have links with.

We living in a corporate oligarchy, disguised as a bureaucratic meritocracy. It is run by and for the rich and powerful merely using government and international agencies as tools of control. Do not vote for the traditional parties of government, do not be fooled by the dupes who scream that startup parties are extremist because there is nothing extremist about wanting a return to democratic government (i.e. the will of the people) as against living under totalitarian oligarchies.

After the political asteroid hit that saw anti - EU parties make enormous advances throughout the European Union in 2014's European Parliament election and with several large EU nation facing elections in 2015 and 2016, mainstream media are warning that political earthquakes could be in store for Europe. Reesearch by the Economist Intelligence Unit for the BBC's Democracy Day find that anti - EU feeling focuses on two issues, the flooding of European nations with third world immigrants by the ruling elites and the ongoing assault on national sovereignty and culture by the unelected bureaucrats of Brussels.

The report says the rising appeal of populist parties could see some winning elections and mainstream parties forced into previously unthinkable alliances. Europe's "crisis of democracy" is a gap between elites and voters, EIU says, adding "there is a gaping hole at the heart of European politics where big ideas should be".

Low turnouts at the polls and sharp falls in the membership of traditional parties are among the key factors in the surge of anti EU and anti - globalist parties.

The United Kingdom, which has a General Election in early May, is "on the cusp of a potentially prolonged period of political instability", according to political analysts.

They say there is a much higher than usual chance that the election will produce an unstable government - predicting that the populist UK Independence Party (UKIP) will take votes from both the Conservatives and Labour, with the Liberal Democrats losing votes and seats across the spectrum to open the way for a minority government propped up by several minor parties each with only a handful of seats.

This fragmentation of what was until 2005 a solid two - party parliament combined with Britain's first-past-the-post electoral system will, the EIU says, make it increasingly difficult to form the kind of single-party governments with a parliamentary majority that have been the norm.

The most immediate political challenge and the first test of how far the growing anti - European sentiment translates into success at the polls will be in Greece. A snap general election takes place there on 25 January. Opinion polls suggest that the far left, anti - EU party Syriza could emerge as the strongest party. If it did and was able to form a government, the Economist research predicts this would act as a catalyst for political upheaval elsewhere. Britain's election in May could throw up even bigger surprises, with Hungary and Denmark joining the UK in the race for the exit.

"The election of a Syriza government would be highly destabilising, both domestically and regionally. It would almost certainly trigger a crisis in the relationship between Greece and its international creditors, as debt write-offs form one of the core planks of its policy platform," the EIU says.

"With similar anti-establishment parties gaining ground rapidly in a number of other countries scheduled to hold elections in 2015, the spill-over effects from a further period of Greek turmoil could be significant." 'Immigration and austerity'

Other examples of European elections with potential for unpredictable results cited by EIU include polls in Denmark, Finland, Spain, France, Sweden, Germany and Ireland.

"There is a common denominator in these countries: the rise of populist parties," the EIU says, "Anti-establishment sentiment has surged across the eurozone (and the larger EU) and the risk of political disruption and potential crises is high."

Opposition to governance from Brussels, immigration and austerity are key themes and rallying cries for many of these parties.

British Democracy In Terminal Decline - Voting Is Redundant And Civil Liberties Are So Last Year

A new study of the health of British democracy over the last decade may shock a few of those smug twats who insist there is nothing to worry about and people who complain about the erosion of civil rights are just conspiracy theorists. The report warns that our ancient democracy is in trouble (forget what you were taught in school, it is way older than The Magna Carta). "The British Democratic system is in long-term terminal decline as the power of corporations keeps growing, politicians become less representative of their constituencies and disillusioned citizens stop voting or even discussing current affairs" the report concludes.

This study undertaken over the past two years has been proven correct in context but has understated the level of decisions taken by David Cameron’s coalition government that have completely bypassed the democratic process. Add to that the number of new laws, regulations and policy initiatives imposed on us by the EU, over which even our elected parliament does not have any influence (the TTIP free trade treaty being a case in point) and it becomes clear that if we continue much further in the same direction, elected assemblies will be to government what Morris Dancing is to the music industry.

Public faith in democratic institutions is “decaying”, according to the report (some might say has decayed, I couldn't possibly comment), the gap in participation rates of different social classes or age groups in the electoral process is widening, and an "unprecedented” growth" in corporate power is noted. (We take this opportunity to remind you that TTIP (sic) will grant corporations the right to overturn laws made by sovereign governments that the money men do not like.)

It is hardly surprising then that the electorate are disconnecting with institutions they see as out of touch, ruled by self interest, elitist, unrepresentative and more concerned with fashionably politically correct causes that with the concerns of ordinary people who work hard to make a living. Many new concerns have also arisen in the past few years, including electoral fraud – one only has to look at the terrible handling by Westminster of Scottish Independence - the culture of cover up which has seen cases of the worst kind of crimes against vulnerable people go uninvestigated either because the establishment closed ranks to protect its own, or because to go after the perpetrators would raise "racially sensitive issues".

We've had junk science on climate change, genetically modified seeds, many types of medicines and social engineering. The junkiest of junk science however is always commissioned by public service organisations and is aimed at convincing the public that our public servants are doing a good job. Fortunately the public are not as gullible as our leaders suppose.
